If you’ve ever played any sports or games with very competitive people (welcome to my life) you might have heard someone say this phrase in an attempt to really impress the opposing party.
“If I don’t win I’m not playing!”
The implication would be that the person who says this only wins at everything they do.
A born winner. A true winner’s mentality!
Is that really true though?
In The Netherlands there’s a 2-week school break at the moment. The weather isn’t super great, so that means lots of time inside.
Our boys were playing some games yesterday, and when I returned after having walked our dog I could already tell by their faces which of them won and which of them lost.
I asked our youngest, “did you win?”
Just a nod of the head to say no.
Then I asked him, “did you enjoy the game though?”
Truth be told, even asking that question felt like going out on a limb, because a question like that will normally bring up the juicy stories.
To my surprise he nodded yes!
“Would you want to play again?” I finally asked him.
And to my bigger surprise the answer was another “yes!”
So he may have lost the game, but he won his attitude!
We like raising winners.
We like being winners!
If you do too, consider the following:
I don’t think anyone ever became a winner without having to learn how to deal with losing as well.
I think it’s important to teach our kids how to deal with losing.
But that counts for all of us, doesn’t it?
We can only really become a winner if we learn how to deal with losing.
